EV Charging Connector
You need know what are the different types of EV connector
Whether you want to charge your electric vehicle at home, at work or at a public station, one thing is essential: the outlet of the charging station has to match the outlet of your car. More precisely, the cable that connects the charging station with your vehicle has to have the right plug on both ends. There are nearly 10 types of EV connector in the world. How do i know which connector in my EV is using? Generally speaking, each EV has both an AC charging port and a DC charging port. Let's start with AC.

There are 4 type of AC connectors:
1. Type 1 connector, it is a single-phase plug and is standard for EVs from North America and Asia (Japan & South Korea). It allows you to charge your car at a speed of up to 7.4 kW, depending on the charging power of your car and grid capability.
2. Type 2 connector, it is mainly used in Europe. This connector has single-phase or triple-phase plug because it has three additional wires to let current run through. So naturally, they can charge your car faster. At home, the highest charging power rate is 22 kW, while public charging stations can have a charging power up to 43 kW, again depending on the charging power of your car and grid capability.
3. GB/T connector, it is use in China only. The standard is GB/T 20234-2. It allows mode 2 (250 V) or mode 3 (440 V) single-phase AC charging at up to 8 or 27.7 kW. In general, charging speeds are also limited by the vehicle's on board charger, which is usually less than 10 kW.
4. TPC (Tesla Proprietary Connector) applies to Tesla only.
There are 6 type of AC connectors:
1. CCS Combo 1, The Combined Charging System (CCS) is a standard for charging electric vehicles. It can use Combo 1 connectors to provide power at up to 350 kilowatts. CCS Combo 1 is extension of the IEC 62196 Type 1 connectors, with two additional direct current (DC) contacts to allow high-power DC fast charging. It is mainly use in North America.
2. CCS Combo 2, it is extension of the IEC 62196 Type 2 connectors. Its performance is similar to CCS Combo 1. Automobile manufacturers that support CCS include BMW, Daimler, Jaguar, Groupe PSA, etc.
3. GB/T 20234.3 DC fast charging system allow for fast charging at up to 250 kW, it is used in China only.
4. CHAdeMO, this quick charging system was developed in Japan, and allows for very high charging capacities as well as bidirectional charging. Currently, Asian car manufacturers (Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc.) are leading the way in offering electric cars that are compatible with a CHAdeMO plug. It allows charging up to 62.5 kW.
5. TPC (Tesla Proprietary Connector) applies to Tesla only. AC and DC use the same connector.
6. CHAOJI is a proposed standard for charging electric cars, under development since 2018., and is planned for charging battery electric vehicles at up to 900 kilowatts using DC. A joint agreement between the CHAdeMO association and the China Electricity Council was signed on 28 August 2018 after which the development was enlarged to a larger international community of experts. ChaoJi-1 operating under the GB/T protocol, for primary deployment in mainland China. ChaoJi-2 operating under the CHAdeMO 3.0 protocol, for primary deployment in Japan and other parts of the world.
